City Nature Challenge (CNC) 2025
City Nature Challenge 2025: A Milestone for Citizen Science and Libraries in Pahang
In a groundbreaking move for environmental engagement, Perpustakaan Al-Bukhari, UiTM Cawangan Pahang, Kampus Jengka successfully led Pahang’s first participation in the global City Nature Challenge (CNC) 2025 through the initiative City Nature Challenge Pahang, Malaysia: Explore Jerantut, Maran & Raub 2025. Held from 25 April to 4 May 2025, this community-driven effort united libraries, educators, students, and the public in exploring and documenting the state’s biodiversity using the iNaturalist app.
The program was supported through strategic partnerships involving PTAR UiTM Pahang (Raub Campus), Perpustakaan Awam Daerah Jerantut, Perpustakaan Awam Daerah Maran, Perpustakaan Awam Daerah Raub, PPM, Sekitar Kita, UMSDC, ORBID Club, and the Faculty of Plantation and Agrotechnology, UiTM.
To kick off the challenge, a Facebook Live session titled "Nature Awaits: Discover the City Nature Challenge 2025 – Pahang & Klang Valley" was broadcast on 23 April 2025 in collaboration with PPM, raising awareness and encouraging public participation.
Among the memorable moments was the launching ceremony at Bukit Istana, Jerantut on 26 April, officiated by TPr. Mohd Khasri bin Abdullah, Setiausaha Majlis Daerah Jerantut. Simultaneous biodiversity observation sessions were also conducted in Maran and Raub on 25 April. Participants actively documented local flora and fauna, many for the first time, while gaining deeper knowledge about the nature surrounding them.
Special prizes were awarded to top contributors in each district:
Most Observations (RM100)
Most Species Recorded (RM80)
Congratulations to our district winners:
Muhammad Hazran bin Nozeri (Maran)
Aysh Farhann Bin Abdul Azri (Raub)
Habibah Binti Idrus (Jerantut)
Their experiences reflect the spirit of CNC:
“This was my first time joining a program like this. I was really excited to explore and learn about local biodiversity.” – Hazran, Maran
“I used to think the trees and insects I saw daily were just ordinary. Now I know every species has its name and value.” – Aysh, Raub
“It was a unique experience that took me beyond the classroom. I'm proud to have represented Jerantut.” – Habibah, Jerantut
This initiative not only strengthens community awareness of biodiversity but also showcases how libraries serve as living platforms for participatory science. Perpustakaan Al-Bukhari is proud to lead this transformation and looks forward to more meaningful engagements that connect knowledge, community, and nature.
